For the first time ever, WDBJ7 Your Hometown News Leader, is providing extensive, live, race-day coverage of the Blue Ridge Marathon.  Billed as “A Celebration of the Outdoors”, programming has been designed to capture the beauty of the Roanoke Valley and its burgeoning reputation among runners, hikers, bikers, paddlers and all lovers of outdoor activities.

WDBJ7 News Director Dan Dennison said, “WDBJ7 has a long history of providing live event coverage in the Roanoke-Lynchburg television market.  This project may be the most ambitious yet, in that it has so many moving parts; both literally and figuratively.”  A team of 65 people is producing more than 3 ½ hours of coverage of the race and in the days leading up to it.  Dennison added, “Our intention is to capture the excitement and competition of the marathon, as well as to highlight interesting runners and to show the natural essence of our region and the tremendous number of family and competitive activities available to them here.” Planning for race day broadcasts has been underway for the past six months.

Running for a 4th year and billed as ‘America’s Toughest Road Race’, the Foot Levelers Blue Ridge Marathon brings thousand of citizen and elite marathon runners to Roanoke, Virginia on April 20, 2013.  Crafted as one of the most challenging and beautiful marathons ever, the full course includes 3,620 feet of total elevation gain and 7,234 feet of total elevation change.  The Blue Ridge Marathon offers breathtaking views and stunning Blue Ridge Mountain scenery.  It has become one of the Roanoke Valley’s quintessential outdoor events.

WDBJ7 will have eight live remote locations and more than a dozen cameras capturing the action at the start in downtown Roanoke, along the course as it winds up and down Mill and Roanoke Mountains, and at the finish line.
